A Message to Cat Owners

Posted by Laura Davis on August 4, 2010 at 4:50 PM

A beautiful grey cat with white paws just died in my arms. Someone had hit the cat with their car just moments before I came upon her. She was still breathing. I pulled my car over to the side of the road and rushed to get the cat out of traffic. Her eyes were open and blood was trickling from her mouth.

I felt for a pulse and it was faint. I picked her up and placed her on the sidewalk out of harms way. I then waited. Her neck was broken and her breathing was slowing down. I talked to her as she died, asking anyone who passed by, "Is this your cat?"

I'm very upset right now. Why do people let their cats roam? This one was hit so hard, her collar laid on the road beside her (without tags) in pieces. I was amazed she still breathed and that the person who hit her hadn't stopped. I was even more amazed that people who were out tending their lawns saw it happen but did nothing. They left the cat in the road to become a pancake. That was someone's pet! Yet, I can't be mad at them. I'm mad at the owner. You left your cat to roam outside. She was beautiful. I know you took care of her because her coat was groomed and she looked well fed. So why would you let her roam? You wouldn't let a dog roam would you?

There are many dangers outside for cats - feline leukemia which is rampant in London, dogs, poisonous plants and cars. Not to mention the fact that it is against the law in London for cats to roam outside. If your cat is caught you will have to pay a $75 fine. But you don't have to worry about that now - because she's dead.

I'm sorry I sound harsh because I know you will grieve your loss. Please take this loss and learn from it, I don't  want to ever go through that again.

Laura,
I am sorry you experienced such a traumatic event. It is surprising how removed people can be. What a difficult situation, but at least the cat found some comfort in your presence. How sad! and...I don't blame you for being angry.

Laura, I confess that, were I placed in the scenario, I may well have been one of those people who passed on by and did nothing. (I doubt that would have been the case many decades ago.) Your compassionate action gives pause for reevaluation ...
Also, your passionate displeasure with owners of roamers, is instructive with regard to their responsibility as pet owners, and is perhaps an aspect that many of us who haven't had pet cats for many years might not have even considered.
Thank you.
