My Husband Thinks I'm Nuts

Posted by Laura Davis on July 18, 2010 at 3:35 PM

After you read this blog, you might think I'm nuts too, but I welcome your opinion as I am about to make a rather crazy decision. Well ... my husband thinks it's crazy, but I'm not so sure.

Come to Me, is about to get a facelift. I have been mulling this over in my mind for about a year now. When Google books decided to upload my ENTIRE book to the internet (the ending included), I noticed a drop in sales. No surprise there. After finding out that my publisher, Lulu, had given them permission to reprint my book, I knew I needed to switch publishers. After realizing that Lulu did not own the rights to my book and dropping words like "lawyer" and "illegal", Google deleted all but 38 pages.

Since that time I have had huge problems getting my book "out there". After talking with a representative from Word Alive Press at the recent Write! Canada conference, I was assured that I could republish Come to Me with them. It would have a new cover, a better marketing campaign (something I failed to really establish early on) and proper distribution into actual "brick and mortar" stores. This has been the frustrating part of dealing with Lulu. To buy my book now, you have to either live in London, Ontario or buy it through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

So, the question I would like to put out there is this: do you think I'm crazy? Should I republish a revised edition of Come to Me with Word Alive? Or should I forget about it (as my husband wishes I would) and use Word Alive Press for my next novel instead?

Laura, how much extra work would it involve? I think it would be an exciting answer to prayer, especially if you plan to release your next book through Word Alive.

No, I don't think you're nuts for considering making this shift. First, I'm sure that most books, however well done, could be improved by some measure of revision, and second, your experience with your publisher has undermined your confidence in their integrity and interest in you as one of their authors. Third, if money is no object, then why not consider going this route?
However, if finances are of concern to your spouse, then to go ahead would possibly ... well let's say that might not be too smart. Just a thought.
If that were my case that would certainly class me as 'nuts'!

Laura, I think you know where I stand with Word Alive Press. As far as credibility they are insurpassable. I love every aspect of working with them. As to this book--only you and hubby can decide that.

Oh, dear Peter! I must be nuts then. LOL! We aren't overflowing with money, but I know that I could save enough to get the job done. However, perhaps not being financially able is a good reason to just forget the whole thing. At the same time, I have never felt more convicted to write a book then I did with this one. I feel very strongly that I did the Lord a disservice by going with Lulu and it needs to be corrected. The cover, while beautiful, also limits its sales, as the stores seem to bring it out only at Christmas! But, it is not a seasonal book.

Jenny it is not a great deal of work at all. I suppose if the funds come through I will have my answer as to whether or not I should go through with this. Time will tell.

Donna, I know you have been pleased. I have no doubt that I will be a happy camper with Word Alive. Sigh. Decisions, decisions.

No one knows that book better than you Laura... certainly not your hubby...
If you really love it and care about it go for it..You won't know until you do..
Oh and you might ask God what He thinks!

LOL! Brenda asking God was my first step. I think the sense of urgency within me, the feeling that I haven't done all I should, is His answer. However, Proverbs 19:20 says, "Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise." So, that is what I am doing, seeking advice.

Hmm, I just left a further comment, and it seems to have disappeared. I guess I deleted it. Maybe I was too nervous. After all, who am I to tell tell you (or anyone) what to do? And since our sister writers in their feminine wisdom have leaned heavily towards making the change to WAP for Come to Me, Yours Truly should let it go at that!
